Recent studies have demonstrated that intravenous transplantation or local injection of bone marrow cells can induce unexpected changes of their fate. The results of these experiments showed that after transplantation or injecton, some of tissue specific somatic cells such as hepatocytes, skeleton, cardiac muscle cells and brain cells expressed the donor cell-specific genes, such as Y chromosome. There are two hypotheses that can explain this phenomenon. One is bone marrow stem cell transdifferentiation and the other is spontaneous cell fusion.

Stem cells: a new strategy for treatment of infections
Infections by bacteria, fungi,or other microorganisms are common clinical diseases that cause millions of deaths every year. The development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria and other microorganisms presents new challenges for treatment of infectious diseases.Stem cell proliferation and differentiation (SCPD),the key physiological processes in all multicellular organisms, plays crucial roles throughout the development and recovery from infectious diseases in the fight against pathogen invasion in multicellular organisms.Manipulation of SCPD has potentiality as a general method for treatment or prevention of infectious diseases.
